The Story of the Greater Bandon Association
Origins and Vision
The Greater Bandon Association was started in 2010 through the merging of two important community initiatives. A determined local movement focused on protecting and strengthening the heart of Bandon led to an application for inclusion in Oregon’s emerging Main Street network. At the same time, the Ford Family Foundation’s Institute on Leadership Programs began exploring organizations capable of catalyzing community transformation in Oregon. These parallel efforts inspired a group of dedicated community members to unite and create the Greater Bandon Association (GBA), driven by a vision to enhance the economic and cultural vitality of the greater Bandon area.
Incorporation and Purpose
The Greater Bandon BytheSea Corporation was formally incorporated in October 2010. From its inception, the organization aimed to serve as a catalyst for economic growth, cultural preservation, and the revitalization of Bandon’s downtown. Its founding purpose was clear: to honor the area’s history while preparing the community for a thriving future.
Community Leadership and Main Street Designation
With Bandon’s designation as an Oregon Main Street town, the GBA assumed the role of steward for the city’s historic core. Early leaders, including Executive Director Harv Schubothe, helped shape the GBA into a volunteer-driven and community-focused organization. Their work emphasized strengthening local businesses, preserving historic assets, and nurturing the unique character that defines Bandon.
Growth and Impact
Over time, the Greater Bandon Association has become a trusted partner among residents, entrepreneurs, and civic leaders. Its efforts demonstrate the belief that a thriving community is built not only on economic development, but also on connection, creativity, and a shared pride in place. Whether supporting local businesses, coordinating revitalization projects, or celebrating Bandon’s cultural heritage, the GBA has consistently acted as a bridge linking the town’s past and its future.
Continuing the Legacy
Today, the Greater Bandon Association continues to uphold the founding legacy: fostering a resilient, vibrant, and welcoming Bandon—rooted in history, strengthened by community, and always looking toward the future.
